The bunting is out! Warrington Housing Association is getting royally excited in advance of the four-day Platinum Jubilee weekend starting on Thursday, June 2.
Queen Elizabeth is the only British monarch ever to reach the extraordinary milestone of a 70-year reign and the longest-reigning royal ruler alive in the entire world.
And WHA is ready to celebrate this record-breaking achievement.
Her Majesty has visited our borough four times over those seven decades, starting with a tour of the newly revitalised Bridge Street in 1968 – 16 years after she acceded to the throne.
In 1979, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Queen were greeted by huge crowds as their official visit took them to the new Golden Square development and the Town Hall.
The Queen met nursing staff at the newly opened Hollins Park Hospital in Winwick as part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the NHS in 1998. She also called in at the BT Call Centre in Westbrook as part of the same visit.
And on May 17, 2012 – exactly 44 years after the first visit to Warrington of her reign, the Queen and Duke were once again greeted by flag-waving crowds who this time had gathered to see Her Majesty unveil the Orford Park community hub, a London 2012 Olympic legacy project.
WHA’s over-50s centre LifeTime will be recreating that patriotic excitement with its Platinum Jubilee Party at Winmarleigh House (Masonic Hall) on Tuesday, May 31, between 1pm-3.30pm.
‘Sally Presents Nostalgia’ will provide the entertainment while guests enjoy a hot buffet with a selection of desserts, tea, coffee, and a licenced bar.
WHA’s customer voice officer Bernie Hubble said: “We are also holding WHA’s very own Right Royal Great British Bake Off! Show off your skills by making your best pudding or cake and be in with a chance of taking home the Pudding Trophy and a £20 Golden Square voucher.”
Best baker will be crowned on Monday, May 30 at WHA’s Lyon Court – so get your weighing scales and imagination ready!
