Now the UK is no longer part of the European Union, anyone who has moved to the UK from an EU country needs to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme, which allows eligible people to live and work in the UK whilst keeping access to certain state benefits, pensions and free NHS treatment. The deadline to apply to the scheme is 30 June 2021 so applicants need to act fast to secure their rights.
Successful applicants will be given ‘settled’ status if they have lived in the UK continuously for at least 5 years, which allows them to live and work in the UK indefinitely, otherwise they will be granted ‘pre-settled’ status which can be upgraded to settled status after 5 years continuous residence by making a further application.
Applications must be made online and evidence of identity and residence in the UK must be provided. A full guide is available on gov.uk.
